June 21-25, August 2-6, September 20-24.
May be taken separately or as a series.
Farm to Pharmacy is a unique and innovative internship program that takes place at Goldthread Herb Farm and Apothecary in the foothills of the Berkshires in western Massachusetts. The Farm to Pharmacy Internship is a unique educational opportunity that exposes students to the full spectrum of herbal medicine, from cultivation of plants to their use in clinical practice, with an emphasis on creating a sustainable, non-toxic, and cost-effective community-based healthcare system.
In addition to the seven-month internship, in response to rapidly growing interest, we have crafted an abbreviated version of the longer Farm to Pharmacy program that teaches all of the fundamentals of our seven-month program in three five-day intensives offered throughout the growing season at the Goldthread Herb Farm. The Farm to Pharmacy intensive-immersion program has been designed to offer people that live outside the community the opportunity to participate in this unique hands-on model of grassroots herbal healthcare in an intensive format. Participants will divide their time between supervised work with the herbs on the farm and classroom presentations designed to teach the most important material from the seven-month program.
The objective of the Farm to Pharmacy intensive-immersion program is to provide participants with the practical skills, medical knowledge and confidence to integrate herbal medicine into the lives of their families and communities according to their personal aspirations. The program is ideal for teachers interested in integrating herbal medicine into their curriculum in school gardens, or herbalists and practitioners of natural medicine who would like to deepen their connection to the plants and increase their understanding of herbal theory. Farmers can take what they learn and integrate it into their existing agricultural projects, and community activists will gain the tools necessary to apply herbal medicine to areas of social justice, urban renewal, and healthcare reform.

Schedule
The first Farm to Pharmacy Intensive will take place Monday through Friday June 21-25, 2010. Classes begin at the farm at 9am and end at 6pm. There will occasionally be special events that go into the evening, ending by 9pm. Days are structured with breaks, and interns will divide their time between working on the farm and classroom time throughout the day. The work will be hands-on and varied; while often physical and occasionally demanding, students will not be asked to over-exert themselves. There will be plenty of opportunity to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings. The first program will end by Friday June 25th at 5pm. The second intensive will take place Monday through Friday August 2 – 6, and the third will take place Monday through Friday September 20 – 24.

The Autumn Inn in Northampton has been selected as the home base for the program; however, interns are free to stay anywhere they wish. A non-smoking New England Colonial-style inn with free high-speed wireless and an outdoor pool, the inn is a short walk to the bustling downtown as well as the beautiful Smith College campus, art museum, and botanic gardens. Special pricing has been secured for participants at $99 room/night from 6/21-25. For those interested in sharing a room, we can help facilitate the process. If a B&B or other options are preferred, you may contact us for recommendations.
Meals
A vegetarian lunch is included in the program fee, prepared using organic vegetables and dairy from local farms. The Autumn Inn provides a continental breakfast and there are over fifty restaurants within a short walk or drive. On the days when classes go into the evening late we will organize dinner.
What to bring
Weather in New England is variable so plan accordingly! The average highs in mid-June are 75-80°F with lows in the mid-50s. Some items to keep in mind are: raingear, jacket, layers, work clothes/shoes, sandals, swimsuits, towels, notebook, and sun protection. Herbal insect repellent will be provided. It is an area where ticks that carry the Lyme bacteria are present, so enclosed shoes, light-colored long sleeves/pants, and frequent spot checks are recommended. More information about this is available online and from us.
Travel
Carpooling from the inn to the farm is recommended as there is limited parking at the farm, and to save on emissions. We will help to arrange this as the time draws closer. We encourage you to come a day or two early or stay the weekend to enjoy this amazing area of the Connecticut River Valley. Whether day trips to the Berkshires and Boston, strolling through the local farmer’s markets and galleries, or a day on the rapids, we are happy to help you find what you’re looking for.
