Goldthread offers a diverse set of innovative learning programs that take place at Goldthread Herb Farm and Apothecary in the foothills of the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts. These capacity-building and experiential courses are life-changing opportunities that expose students to the fundamentals of herbal medicine synthesizing traditional Chinese, Ayurvedic, & Western herbal traditions. From cultivation of plants to their use in clinical practice, Farm to Pharmacy emphasizes creating a sustainable, non-toxic, and cost-effective community-based healthcare system.
These classes will familiarize you with the principal herbs used in treating common seasonal ailments, teaching you how to stock your own wellness pantry, as well as addressing particular issues. Check back for more soon!
Farm to Pharmacy is our longest running and most popular program.
We now offer two courses:
• Our full-length, 7-Month Program, which takes place over the course of the entire growing season April - October
• Our Summer Session, which takes place June-August
Interns begin in the greenhouse, tending to seedlings and learning the fundamentals of propagating over one hundred species of medicinal plants. As the season progresses students learn plant identification, soil health and composition, composting strategies, maintenance and design of educational and production gardens, and harvesting and processing techniques. A special part of the program is the unique opportunity to participate in the distillation of essential oils and hydrosols over a wood fire in our new eighty-five gallon commercial still.
Our educational approach combines working with living herbs in the soil, studying the academic and scientific knowledge of phytomedicine, and then utilizing finished herbal products for practical healing purposes. Farm to Pharmacy Summer Intensive
September 22-28
We have crafted an abbreviated version of the longer Farm to Pharmacy program that teaches all of the fundamentals of our seven-month program in a 7-day intensive offered at the end of the growing season at Goldthread Herb Farm. The Farm to Pharmacy Intensive-immersion program has been designed to offer people that live outside the community the opportunity to participate in this unique hands-on model of grassroots herbal healthcare in an intensive format. Participants will divide their time between supervised work with the herbs on the farm and classroom presentations designed to teach the most important material from the seven-month program. Botanical Medicine and the Five Elements of Ayurveda

Our newest summer intensive explores the language of herbal energetics and the aesthetics, qualities and manifestations of the Ayurvedic 5-Elements, as seen in the plants and within our own bodies. This multi-dimensional immersion takes place on the farm where participants will see, taste, touch, smell and experience the healing properties of the plants. This course is hands-on and capacity building, and particpants will come away with both a scholastic and deeply felt understanding of Botanical Medicine. More Info....
